Coaching Corner: Pressing to Win the Ball!

November 6, 2026 By John Padmore

Help young players improve their defending, decision-making and teamwork!

England Football Learning has shared a useful coaching session called “Pressing to Defend 1v1s”, designed to help young footballers recognise when to press an opponent and how to win possession.

Pressing and Defending Skills – Park Regis Junior FC

The session uses fun, practical activities to develop three important skills:

  • Positioning: Using body shape and movement to guide opponents away from dangerous areas.
  • Decision-making: Recognising opportunities to press, such as when an opponent takes a heavy touch or makes a poor pass.
  • Teamwork: Communicating and pressing together to win the ball and create scoring opportunities.

The activities progress from simple tag games to one-versus-one challenges and small-sided matches, helping players develop confidence while enjoying their football.

Coaches can adapt the exercises to suit different ages, abilities and squad sizes.

At Park Regis Junior FC, we encourage players to learn, work together and enjoy developing their football skills.
